BATS

Mexican Free-tailed Bats in an attic

Bats are the only mammals that can truly fly. Their appearance and nocturnal habits of bats have contributed to our folklore, superstition and fear. Over forty species of bats are found in the United States. Only a few bats cause problems with humans. The Vampire bat, which has been the most maligned bat, is not found in the United States.

There are two general categories of bats, Solitary and Colonial. Colonial bats cause the most problems for humans. The little brown bat, (Myotis lucifugus) the big brown bat, (Eptesicus fuscus) and the Mexican free-tailed bat (tadarida brasiliensis) are common colonial bats that often take up residence in buildings occupied by humans.

Colonies of bats have been known to reach nearly 2,000 individuals. Bats may hang in barns, garages and attics. Bat droppings and urine may stain ceilings, foul cars and hay, their waste also attracts unwanted insect pests (fleas, mites, etc.), cause odors and unsanitary conditions.

Most bats found in the United States feed mostly on insects, a bat may eat half it's weight in bugs a night. A hundred bats may eat 100,000 thousand insects each night, which include mosquito, midge, moths and beetles. For this reason, bats are considered beneficial animals, as long as they don't roost in your attic.
Rabies is the most important public health hazard associated with bats, although the number of cases of bat transmitted rabies is greatly exaggerated.

Animal Pest Management Services, Inc. specializes in the removal of bat populations from structures. Our methods do not harm the bats. We modify their habitat, which encourages the bats to live elsewhere. We provide fast and accurate pest identification, with guaranteed results.
